Sri Lanka Off-Road Adventure

There is a seductive, melancholy beauty about Sri Lanka that you may not find anywhere else in the world. It is today a nation that is fast recovering from years of civil war – ever more reason to quickly pack your bags. Sri Lanka is referred as the “resplendent land” – in the ancient Indian epic Ramayana. The island has numerous other references that testify to its natural beauty and wealth. Islamic folklore maintains that Adam and Eve were offered refuge on the island as solace for their expulsion from the Garden of Eden. Buddhism existed in Sri Lanka during its period of extended glory and is still an integral part of the Sinhala culture. Asian poets have lauded Sri Lanka as a beauty, calling it the “pearl upon the brow of India.”

DAY 1 Kithulgala

A short transfer from Negombo/Colombo will take you to the outskirts to begin cycling. This transfer is necessary to avoid highways, cities, and traffic. Your day starts at the foothills of the mountainous central highlands region, where we will cycle for the next three days. We stop for lunch at Ruwanwella and prepare for the final 30 km of a gentle uphill ride to our accommodation on the banks of the Kelani River, where a cold beer awaits us. Although Kithulgala was the filming location for David Lean’s masterpiece "Bridge on the River Kwai," it is not a major tourist attraction. Over the next few days, your meals will include local delicacies such as fruits, curries, rice, and sambol.

DAY 2 Nuwara Eliya

Today is one of the toughest days as we journey into the heart of the central highlands. We begin with a 90-minute transfer to Kotagala via the Ginigathena Pass, avoiding 30 km of main roads. At Kotagala, we commence our day's challenge, aiming to reach the planters’ bungalow on the Thalawakelle Tea Estate by mid-morning, where we pause for a cup of the finest Ceylon Tea with a view of the magnificent Devon waterfall. From here, our route veers north off the main road through Watagoda, ascending along an incredible tea estate road carved into the escarpment for 18 km—the toughest section of our Sri Lankan journey. This stretch can be unexpectedly challenging, and some may choose to walk parts of it. We conclude the day with a relaxing downhill ride to our hotel in Nuwara Eliya.

DAY 3 Kandy

Today, we depart Nuwara Eliya for our longest day, passing through picturesque highland towns. We begin with a 15 km downhill ride that leads us to the Bluefield Tea Estate, where we make a brief stop before continuing our journey. Another 40 km of enjoyable downhill cycling brings us to Delpitiya, from where we continue on almost deserted roads for the next 50 km, enjoying spectacular views. Lunch will be near the village of Pupuressa, known for its wonderful waterfalls. In the afternoon, we proceed through Gallaha and finally reach Kandy, entering alongside its beautiful university campus before continuing to our hotel in this charming and relaxed city.

DAY 4 Departure

Following breakfast, we will transport you to Colombo.
