DAY 1 Colombo

Upon arrival at Colombo, you will be warmly greeted and transferred to your comfortable hotel. Join us for a group meeting later in the evening, where you'll have the opportunity to meet fellow travelers and get an overview of your upcoming adventure. After the briefing, embark on a guided walk around Colombo, exploring key sights and local highlights. Conclude your first day with a delightful dinner, setting the stage for an exciting journey ahead.

DAY 2 Jaffna

Start your adventure with an early morning train ride from Colombo to Jaffna, Sri Lanka’s Tamil heartland. Experience the recently upgraded railway line, which was reopened in 2014, offering a variety of carriage options from vibrant colonial-style compartments with air conditioning to newer, high-grade Chinese-built locomotives with first-class amenities. As you travel north, enjoy stunning sea views up to Colombo Fort and picturesque landscapes through Kurunegala, Anuradhapura, and Vavuniya. Your journey will take you across the historic Elephant Pass, a narrow land strip notable for its role in Sri Lankan history, including key battles during the civil war in 1991 and 2000. Arriving in Jaffna, check into your hotel and then set out to explore the town. In the afternoon, take a refreshing bike ride to one of the beautiful beaches on the Jaffna Peninsula, where you can unwind and soak in the scenic coastal beauty.

DAY 3 Jaffna

Embark on an exhilarating cycling journey from Jaffna Port to Kayts (Velani), a part of a crescent of islands. Pedal across a scenic causeway onto the island, where you'll traverse a flat, open route adorned with derelict buildings, fishing villages, and Hindu temples. Board a ferry to Karainagar (Karaitivu) and continue your exploration. On the northern tip of Karainagar, discover the tranquil Casuarina Beach, renowned for its white sands and shallow, inviting waters. Enjoy picturesque views of Fort Hammenhiel, a unique 17th-century Portuguese fort built from coral stone on its own sandbank in the sea. Cycle back to Jaffna along a 4km causeway flanked by a lagoon on one side and the ocean on the other. Observe wading fishermen and, during the migratory season from March to September, marvel at thousands of Greater Flamingos and various wader species flocking to the lagoon's brackish waters. This region is a haven for bird enthusiasts and nature lovers alike, offering a rich tapestry of wildlife and breathtaking landscapes.

DAY 4 Killinochchi

Today, we embark on a southward cycling adventure to Killinochchi, passing through the historic Elephant Pass. This key route, once a strategic location during Sri Lanka’s civil war, now offers a glimpse into the region’s recovery and development. Killinochchi, formerly the Tamil Tigers' capital, is gradually rebuilding from its tumultuous past. Despite the simplicity of our accommodation, you can expect a warm and friendly welcome from the local community. This leg of the journey provides a unique opportunity to witness the resilience and progress of this important area in Sri Lanka.

DAY 5 Mulliyawalai

Today, we cycle towards the eastern coast of Sri Lanka, reaching the town of Mulliyawalai. This area is in the process of rebuilding after nearly three decades of civil war, offering a unique perspective on the region’s recovery and development. As you ride through Mulliyawalai, you'll notice the contrast between the bustling, tourist-friendly west coast and the more rugged, natural beauty of the eastern shores. Explore the Nanthi Kadal Lagoon, a site of significant historical conflict, now marked by the serene presence of herons and lush palmyra palm trees. Despite its past, the area shows few traces of conflict today, though some regions are still marked with cautionary signs about landmines. Immerse yourself in the unspoiled charm of Mulliyawalai, where the resurgence of tourism is providing new opportunities for local communities and contributing to the area’s vibrant recovery.

DAY 6 Nilaveli

Today, we continue our journey along Sri Lanka’s stunning eastern coastline, featuring a brief and scenic ferry crossing. Our destination is Nilaveli, renowned for its 4km stretch of golden sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters. Just 1km offshore, Pigeon Island National Park awaits, comprising two small islands rich in natural beauty. Designated a bird sanctuary in 1963 and upgraded to national park status in 2003, Pigeon Island is renowned for its vibrant ecosystems. The islands are named for their rock pigeon colonies, and the surrounding waters boast some of Sri Lanka’s finest coral reefs. These shallow reefs are perfect for snorkeling and diving, offering glimpses of diverse corals, colorful fish, and graceful turtles. Upon arrival at your hotel in Nilaveli, take the opportunity to visit Pigeon Island for a snorkeling adventure, exploring its breathtaking marine life and pristine coral formations.

DAY 7 Habanarana

Today, we journey inland to Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle, cycling through the scenic Kaudulla National Park. Established to serve as a vital migratory corridor for elephants, Kaudulla connects with Minneriya and Wasgomuwa National Parks to the south, and Somawathiya National Park to the north and east. At the heart of the park lies Kaudulla Tank, an ancient watering hole where elephants and other wildlife converge, especially during the dry season when other water sources have dwindled. In addition to elephants, Kaudulla is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including sambar deer, monkeys, sloth bears, leopards, and numerous bird species. After immersing yourself in the park’s natural beauty and wildlife, continue cycling for an additional 22km to reach Habarana, where your adventure continues amidst Sri Lanka’s rich cultural heritage.

DAY 8 Habarana

Located in the heart of Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle, Habarana offers an ideal base for exploring the region’s rich heritage. Just 14 km away lies Sigiriya’s Lion Rock, a UNESCO World Heritage site often hailed as the “eighth wonder of the world.” This ancient marvel from the 5th century B.C. features stunning landscaped gardens, elaborate ponds, moats, and ramparts. Ascend the rock to explore the impressive ruins of the King’s palace perched high above, accessible via a series of twisting steps and stairways. In Habarana itself, take a leisurely walk around Habarana Lake, encircled by a scenic footpath. The lake, spanning 25 acres, is a hub of local activity with fishermen often seen plying their trade. It’s also a birdwatcher's paradise, home to 138 species of birds, including several protected and endangered species unique to the area. Enjoy the serene beauty of Habarana Lake while observing its vibrant avian residents.

DAY 9 Polonnaruwa

Today’s shorter cycling route offers the perfect opportunity to delve into the historic treasures of Polonnaruwa, a key highlight of Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle. As a former medieval capital from the 11th to 12th centuries AD, Polonnaruwa boasts a remarkable collection of well-preserved stupas, moonstones, majestic parks, towering ancient structures, and grand statues. Among the city’s many wonders, the Gal Vihara stands out with its impressive giant Buddha statues, showcasing exquisite art and architectural achievements from the period. The ruins are spread across a vast area of lush woodland, making cycling an ideal way to explore this extensive and captivating temple complex. Covering approximately 15 km by bike, you'll have the chance to visit all major sites, immersing yourself in the historical and cultural richness of this ancient city.

DAY 10 Kandy

After a hearty breakfast, begin your cycling adventure towards Matale, renowned for its spice plantations, and continue on to Kandy, Sri Lanka’s cultural capital. Kandy is celebrated for the Temple of the Tooth Relic, a sacred site that holds immense significance and grandeur, deeply revered by locals and visitors alike. Upon arrival in Kandy, take a leisurely walk through the Royal Botanical Gardens of Peradeniya, known for its lush landscapes and diverse flora. Then, cycle through the picturesque hill country, navigating undulating routes with a mix of climbs and descents. Check into your hotel for a delightful lunch and spend the afternoon relaxing with scenic views of Kandy Lake. In the evening, explore the vibrant city and immerse yourself in the rich traditions of Kandyan culture with a captivating cultural dance performance.

DAY 11 Nuwara Eliya

Today’s cycling journey takes you on an exhilarating and challenging climb to Nuwara Eliya, Sri Lanka’s renowned tea-producing capital. Known as "Little England" for its colonial charm and lush landscapes, Nuwara Eliya offers a breathtaking mountain vista dotted with endless tea plantations. As you pedal through the hill country, you’ll be surrounded by vibrant green tea fields, historic temples, and the quaint homes of tea workers. The route also showcases colonial-era buildings established by the British, adding a touch of historical elegance to your ride. If time allows, take a stroll through local markets and charming towns to experience the unique culture and vibrant community of this highland region. Enjoy the picturesque landscapes and rich heritage that make Nuwara Eliya a highlight of your Sri Lankan adventure.

DAY 12 Ella

This morning, embark on a captivating cycling adventure as we leave town and head towards the picturesque hills of Ella. Renowned for its rich wildlife, Ella offers a unique opportunity to encounter giant squirrels and a variety of bird species in their natural habitat. Ella’s scenic beauty is steeped in folklore, with local legends attributing the region to the epic Ramayana. According to tradition, the Sri Lankan demon King Ravana abducted Sita and concealed her in the lush Hakgala National Park. This area is believed to be the pleasure garden described in the Ramayana as Ashok Vatika, adding a layer of historical and cultural significance to your journey. Explore the enchanting landscapes of Ella, where natural splendor meets mythological history, making your cycling experience both thrilling and immersive.

DAY 13 Udawalawe National Park

Today’s cycling route takes you downhill from Ella through charming villages and vibrant local markets, offering a glimpse into daily life in Sri Lanka. As you make your way towards Udawalawe National Park, you'll pass by fruit trees and local vendors selling fresh produce and yogurt, enriching your journey with local flavors and sights. Upon reaching Udawalawe National Park, renowned for its thriving wildlife, you’ll have the option to embark on an exhilarating jeep safari. As you pedal through lush banana plantations, you'll experience the unique charm of Sri Lanka’s rural heartland. Upon reaching Tangalle, the landscape shifts to a vibrant coastal environment. The transition from the countryside to the seaside brings a distinct change in atmosphere, with the warm, humid air and the occasional aroma of fresh fish from local markets.
