DAY 1 Negombo
You will be welcomed by our local guide and driver at the airport. You will be transferred to the coastal town of Negombo, where you can relax for the rest of the day, recovering from your tiredness and jet lag from the long flight. Situated on the west coast of Sri Lanka, Negombo is very famous for its beaches along its long coastline. Near the waterfront, remains of the 17th-century Dutch fort now house a prison, and the Negombo Lagoon, lined with fishermen’s huts, feeds into the Dutch-era Hamilton Canal. These are the main highlights of the town. You can also spend the rest of the day exploring the local attractions.
DAY 2 Anuradhapura
Today, we begin our cycling adventure to experience the inland delights of Sri Lanka. We start cycling from the hotel, biking along a picturesque route past many fishing communities before stopping for lunch at a small beach restaurant. After lunch, we transfer you and the bikes to skip the traffic, then resume biking on routes past the forests of Wilpattu National Park, heading towards the ancient and cultural center of Buddhism, Anuradhapura. Anuradhapura is one of the most venerated and holiest Buddhist places in Sri Lanka.
DAY 3 Anuradhapura
Today, we will take a half-day cycling excursion to the UNESCO Ancient City of Anuradhapura. Anuradhapura is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a revered holy site for the majority of local Sinhalese people. The city's greatest treasures are its dagobas, constructed of bricks and hemispherical in shape. The city's most renowned relic is the sacred Bo Tree, which is said to have grown from a branch of the tree under which the Buddha gained enlightenment.
DAY 4 Sigiriya
We leave the ancient city of Anuradhapura and start heading to the famed Sigiriya. Our route takes us through rural farmlands and acres of paddy fields, showcasing village life. It’s a peaceful and gentle ride to Sigiriya town. In the evening, we can climb Pidurangala Rock and watch the sunset.
DAY 5 Sigiriya
This day starts early to beat the crowds. In the morning, we visit the famed Sigiriya Rock, followed by the Dambulla Cave Complex. In the evening, we can ride our bikes for a short, beautiful journey along the canal roads. Sigiriya: Sigiriya is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the 5th-century "Fortress in the Sky," which is perhaps the most fantastic single wonder of the island. It is also known as Lion Rock because of the huge lion that once stood at the entrance to the palace on the summit of the 600-foot-high rock. Dambulla Cave Temple: The Dambulla Cave Temple is a vast isolated rock mass, 500 feet high and a mile around the base. It is home to the famous Rock Temple, dating back to the first century B.C. The caves of Dambulla sheltered King Walagamba during his 14 years of exile from Anuradhapura. When he regained the throne, he built the most magnificent rock temples on the island. In the first cave, there is a recumbent image of the Buddha, 47 feet long, cut out of the rock. Surrounding it are images of deities associated with Buddhism. The frescoes on the walls and ceiling are the oldest here but have been painted over during the Kandy period. The second cave, the finest and largest of all, contains 150 life-size statues of the Buddha in various postures, along with a few statues of gods and kings. The ceiling is also covered with frescoes depicting significant events in the life of the Buddha and landmarks in the history of the Sinhalese people.
DAY 6 Polonnaruwa
We get on our bikes from the hotel and head onto village back roads toward Polonnaruwa. It's an amazing day as we completely avoid the main roads, cycling alongside Angamadilla National Park before arriving in Polonnaruwa. After checking in at our hotel, we take a walk in the ancient city ruins to observe local families of monkeys. We'll first try to locate the purple-faced langur troops or the larger troops of gray langurs. Around 5 pm, bird lovers will enjoy seeing many birds, and there’s a chance to spot deer grazing in the underbrush in forest areas only our field guides venture. Polonnaruwa: Another UNESCO World Heritage Site, Polonnaruwa was the capital of Sri Lanka from the 11th to the 13th centuries and features splendid and spectacular statues. Lankatilaka, Tivanka, and Thuparama are the most beautiful and largest image houses, with Tivanka showcasing the best frescoes from the Polonnaruwa period. Rankoth Vehera and Kirivehera are well-preserved large stupas. Gal Vihare, a rock shrine, has four Buddha statues: two seated, one standing, and one reclining. The Parakrama Bahu statue is an excellent example of Sinhalese stone carving.
DAY 7 Mahiyangana
On this beautiful day of cycling, we start with a short transfer out of Polonnaruwa before getting on our bikes. Our route today takes us through the scenic Maduru Oya National Park. The park is full of elephants, so we will need to be careful. En route, we will stop at the Maduru Oya Reservoir for a picnic lunch. After lunch, we will continue cycling up to the hotel.
DAY 8 Kandy
We rest our legs today and transfer to the small village of Hasalaka. We spend the morning exploring the nearby waterfalls and rivers. We can swim at the base of the waterfalls before returning to the village. We will enjoy a meal prepared by the locals before heading on to Kandy.
DAY 9 Kandy
Early in the morning, we can take a walk to the famed Buddhist Temple of the Tooth. After the temple visit, we will return to the hotel for breakfast. After breakfast, we will explore Kandy on bikes. Kandy: The hill capital, Kandy, is another UNESCO World Heritage Site. It was the last stronghold of the Sinhalese kings during Portuguese, Dutch, and British rule, finally ceding to the British in 1815. To the Buddhists of Sri Lanka and the world, Kandy is one of the most sacred sites as it is home to the Dalada Maligawa, the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha. Today, it is the center of Buddhism, arts, crafts, dancing, music, and culture. Visitors can experience these dances and music at the daily cultural performances held at several venues in the city.
