DAY 1 Chilaw

On the first day of our Sri Lanka Cycling Holidays guide, we will meet you at the airport and transfer you to Chilaw. You can relax at the hotel to recover from your long flight. Sit by the beach or relax by the pool and enjoy the beautiful sunset. We’ll meet up as a group for bike sizing and dinner early in the evening.

DAY 2 Anuradhapura

After breakfast, we take an initial transfer (2 hours / 70 km) to Nawattagategama, a small town situated in the northwest province. From here, we head to Anuradhapura, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its well-preserved ruins of ancient Sri Lankan civilization. It is one of the ancient capitals of Sri Lanka, dating back to the 5th century BC. The scenery for the day includes constantly changing vistas – rural villages, paddy fields, and lakes. Terrain-wise, it is relatively flat. Upon arrival, we’ll make sure to check out the oldest living human-planted tree in the world (249 BC), the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, which is said to be part of the Sri Maha Bodhi under which Lord Buddha attained enlightenment.

DAY 3 Sigiriya

We leave the ancient city of Anuradhapura and start heading to the famed Sigiriya. Our route takes us through rural farmlands and acres of paddy fields. Village life is on display, offering a peaceful and gentle ride to Sigiriya town. In the evening, we can climb Pidurangala Rock and watch the sunset.

DAY 4 Sigiriya

This day starts early to beat the crowds. We visit the famed Sigiriya Rock in the morning, followed by the Dambulla Cave Complex. In the evening, we can get on our bikes for a short, beautiful ride along the canal roads. Sigiriya is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the 5th-century “Fortress in the Sky,” perhaps the most fantastic single wonder of the island. It is also known as Lion Rock because of the huge lion that used to stand at the entrance to the palace on the summit of the 600-foot-high rock. The Dambulla Cave Temple is a vast isolated rock mass 500 feet high and a mile around the base. The famous Rock Temple dates back to the first century B.C. The caves of Dambulla sheltered King Walagamba during his 14 years of exile from Anuradhapura. When he regained the throne, he built the most magnificent of the Rock Temples found on the island. In the first cave is a recumbent image of the Buddha, 47 feet long, cut out of the rock. There are images of deities associated with Buddhism all around. The frescoes on the walls and the ceiling are the oldest here but have been painted over during the Kandy period. In the second cave, the finest and largest of all, there are 150 life-size statues of the Buddha in various postures, along with a few statues of gods and kings. The ceiling is also covered with frescoes depicting great events in the life of the Buddha and landmarks in the history of the Sinhalese people.

DAY 5 Polonnaruwa

We get on our bikes from the hotel and head onto village back roads towards Polonnaruwa. It is an amazing day as we go completely off the main roads, cycling alongside the Angamadilla National Park before arriving at Polonnaruwa. We then rest up at our hotel before going for a walk in the ancient city ruins to observe the local families of monkeys. We first try to locate the purple-faced langur troops or the larger troops of gray langurs. Around 5 pm, there will be many birds for bird lovers, as well as a chance to see deer grazing in the underbrush in forest areas where only our field guides venture. Polonnaruwa, another World Heritage Site, was the capital of Sri Lanka from the 11th to 13th centuries and contains some splendid and spectacular statues. Lankatilake, Tivanka, and Thuparama are the most beautiful and largest image houses, and Tivanka has the best examples of frescoes from the Polonnaruwa period. Rankoth Vehera and Kirivehera are well-preserved large stupas, and Gal Vihare, a rock shrine, has four Buddha statues: two seated, one standing, and one reclining. The Parakrama Bahu statue is an example of Sinhalese stone carving.

DAY 6 Mahiyangana

This is another beautiful day of cycling. We start with a short transfer out of Polonnaruwa before we get on our bikes. Our route today is through the scenic Maduru Oya National Park. The park is full of elephants, so we will need to be careful. En route, we will stop at the Maduru Oya Reservoir for a picnic lunch. After lunch, we will continue cycling up to the hotel.

DAY 7 Kandy

We rest our legs today and transfer to the small village of Hasalaka. We spend the morning exploring the nearby waterfalls and rivers, where we can take a swim at the base of the waterfalls before returning to the village. We will enjoy a meal prepared by the locals before heading on to Kandy. In Kandy, after resting for a bit, we can take a walk to the famed Buddhist Temple of the Tooth. Kandy, the hill capital, is another UNESCO Heritage Site. It was the last stronghold of the Sinhalese Kings during Portuguese, Dutch, and British rule, although it was finally ceded to the British in 1815. To the Buddhists of Sri Lanka and the world, Kandy is one of the most sacred sites as it is the home of the Dalada Maligawa, the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic of Lord Buddha. Today, it is the center of Buddhism, arts, crafts, dancing, music, and culture. Visitors can see these dances and music at the daily cultural performances held at several places in the city.

DAY 8 Nuwara Eliya

Today, we take the train to the tea capital, Nuwara Eliya. It is a scenic ride as the train winds through the hills and tea estates. In the evening, we can cycle around the town center. Nuwara Eliya, known as the ‘Little England’ of Sri Lanka, is surrounded by beautiful mountains, valleys, waterfalls, and tea plantations. It is considered one of the coolest places on the island, with temperatures resembling an English spring day, though it can drop at night. Throughout Nuwara Eliya, you will find evidence of British influence, from houses resembling country cottages to Queen Anne-style mansions. Victoria Park in the heart of the town is ideal for a leisurely stroll or a picnic, and it offers excellent birdwatching opportunities, with sightings of rare birds possible. While seasons may not be distinct elsewhere in Sri Lanka, here you can observe them through the blooming flowers in spring (March to May) and fall (August and September).

DAY 9 Bandarawela

Today marks a surreal day of the Sri Lanka Cycling Holiday. We begin by transferring from our hotel to the mountain grasslands of Horton Plains. After a brief walk, we embark on a downhill bike ride to Bandarawela. The journey is incredibly scenic, leading us through cloud forests before descending into lower pine forests.

DAY 10 Udawalawe National Park

Today offers another day of beautiful downhill cycling, with views of scenic valleys and tea estates along rarely used back roads. We cycle up to Wellawaya town, where we then transfer the remaining distance to Udawalawe by car. After lunch and a refreshing shower, we head for a safari at Udawalawe National Park.

DAY 11 Mirissa

Today marks our final day of cycling. We pedal through the plains from Udawalawe to the beach town of Mirissa, passing through paddy fields and farms. Our route winds through small villages, offering a glimpse of rural Sri Lanka. It's a long day filled with diverse experiences. Our destination is the stunning Mirissa beach, where we can unwind and relax after an active day on the Sri Lanka Cycling Holiday.

DAY 12 Mirissa

Today is all about relaxation. We encourage absolute relaxation—lounging by the pool or taking a dip in the sea. If you're feeling a bit restless, we could take a short drive to Galle to explore the old Dutch Colonial Fort.

DAY 13 Galle

On our penultimate day of the Sri Lanka Bicycle Holiday, we head to the beautiful coastal town of Galle. After lunch, we will begin our sightseeing tour. Galle Dutch Fort, a major city on the South Coast, is home to the oldest landmark, the massive Portuguese and Dutch Fort, designated as a World Heritage Site. Some scholars believe it to be the “Tarshish” mentioned in the Old Testament, where King Solomon sent his merchant vessels and where Jonah fled from the Lord. Today, the 90-acre Galle Fort shows no evidence of its Portuguese founders. The Dutch integrated the northern wall into a grand rampart in 1663, adding a second, taller wall inside it. Between these walls, a covered passage linked the central bastion with the fort’s two half bastions overlooking the sea. The Dutch also implemented a sophisticated drainage system with brick-lined underground sewers that were flushed twice daily by the tides. The original fort gate was near the harbor, still marked today by the British Coat-of-Arms on the front and the Dutch V.O.C. (Vereenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie) Coat-of-Arms with a rooster crest on the inner side.
